About Us

The Story of Feathered Ambassadors and Friends
A Legacy of Flight and Care
The journey began in 2001 when Joe and Stephanie Carvalho acquired their current property with a singular, visionary goal:
to provide dedicated airspace where their birds could fly uninhibited in a safe, natural environment. This land has been the birds' sanctuary ever since, serving as the home base where ambassadors were trained for global educational productions.
In 2004, the mission was formalized with the creation of Feathered Ambassadors and Friends (FAF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For decades, FAF operated a selective outreach program, traveling to schools, elderly homes, and churches as schedules and animal welfare permitted, between major U.S. and international zoo and theme park contracts.
The Evolution of Our Mission
While our history is rooted in global travel and high-level productions through Carvalho's Friends of a Feather, Inc., our operations have evolved to prioritize the long-term health of our animals and our founders. Following the challenges of 2021, we shifted away from the rigors of travel to a more sustainable, property-based model.
By hosting guests at our private facility, we ensure the birds remain stable and stress-free in their familiar environment. This transition allows us to continue our vital work—sharing the grandeur of these creatures—while honoring the physical sustainability of our team and the specialized care our ambassadors deserve.
Education Adventures & Encounters
Since 2021, the formalization of our property-based model has allowed us to increase the depth of our private and exclusive encounters. By bringing the audience to the birds—rather than the birds to the audience—we create an environment where education is live, interactive, and deeply personal.
Through these curated experiences, we provide a unique opportunity to:
-
Discover: Share vital information regarding endangered and exotic species and their natural habitats.
-
Understand: Observe natural behaviors up close and learn about the real-world effects of rainforest deforestation.
-
Connect: Engage with our ongoing efforts in endangered species rehabilitation.
Our Educational Ambassadors
Each bird and animal in our care is more than just a resident; they are a proud representative of their species. As Educational Ambassadors, they serve as the bridge between our guests and the natural world, inspiring a new generation of conservationists to take action.

FOUNDERS

Joe Carvalho
CFO & Directory of Training
The Foundational Expert
Joe's journey began at age five with a bird named Pepito and a bicycle. By age 22, while running his "Bird Bath Car Wash" in Fremont, CA, Joe began bringing his feathered friends to local schools on rainy days — the true beginning of his life's calling.
In 1979, after a celebrated appearance on The Gong Show, Joe was recruited by Knott's Berry Farm in Southern California. What began as a single weekend engagement was so well-received by guests that it evolved into a full summer residency.
During that season, an unforeseen fire at the park tragically took his entire flock. Heartbroken, Joe vowed to leave the bird world behind.
It was the children of the community who brought him back; they launched "Pennies for Polly," presenting Joe with handmade cards and their own savings to help him start over. This profound gesture of love fueled a revived optimism that has lasted over 45 years.
A veteran of the international zoo and theme park industry, Joe became the technical lead for Carvalho's Friends of a Feather, Inc. He provided the elite animal training and husbandry required for major productions at SeaWorld Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa, and many more. His mastery contributed to the success of award-winning acts, including the IAATE Behavior of the Year (2001) and multiple IAAPA Brass Ring honors.
Joe continues to uphold these elite training standards today at the sanctuary, ensuring every guest experiences the true grandeur of our ambassadors.
Throughout his career on the global stage, Joe fought to ensure the grandeur of his birds was accessible to everyone, navigating complex bureaucracies to secure one-on-one "Meet-and-Greets" for guests.
Today, he has removed those barriers to focus entirely on the direct bond between the animals and the people — ensuring that every guest, regardless of need, can experience their beauty firsthand.
In 2002, during the early development of the property, Joe faced a stubborn rock that no equipment could remove. Frustrated and over budget, he was ready to dynamite it. The next morning, reading from the Bible Stephanie had given him, he came to Psalm 61:1-4 — and he and his grader Jeff both knew. The rock would stay. Joe has called it God's Rock ever since — because on that ground, beneath the shelter of His wings, a sanctuary was born.

Stephanie Carvalho
CEO & Director of Operations
The Architect of Connection
Stephanie's story began at age eight, alone in the Santa Cruz mountains with God and a quiet but certain knowing — that her life would be dedicated to helping children, the elderly, and the animals that crossed her path.
This summer marks Stephanie's 40th year of professional expertise in avian husbandry and high-level show production. Since 1986, she has served as the operational architect of Carvalho's Friends of a Feather, Inc. At the height of this era, Stephanie simultaneously managed nine independent contracts across the U.S. and internationally, overseeing the complex logistics of diverse teams and hundreds of animal ambassadors.
As the Director of Operations, Stephanie authored the proprietary Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that became the cornerstone of her company's success. These systems—including predictive weight-charting, the Behavior Training Program (BTP), and the Medical Treatment Profile (MTP)—were designed as sophisticated fail-safes. These rigorous protocols provided the safety and consistency required to support Joe's groundbreaking free-flight work with species rarely seen in the industry, including the Andean Condor, Marabou Stork, and the complex Hornbill "grape retrieval" flight. It was this synergy of operational safety and training mastery that earned their teams the IAATE Behavior of the Year (2001) and multiple White Glove Awards from August Busch of Busch Entertainment Corporation. Having worked alongside Joe in live productions for decades, Stephanie's hands-on experience in avian husbandry and performance serves as the vital backbone of the sanctuary's continuity of care, ensuring the safety and stability of the ambassadors remains unbroken.
Beyond the technical systems, Stephanie's legacy is defined by her commitment to Human and Animal Wellness. She recognized early on that for birds to receive consistent, elite care, the human team must be healthy and empowered. She pioneered a radical accountability structure designed to eliminate "information hoarding"—not through mandate, but by demonstrating that shared knowledge creates peace of mind. By training every team member to operate as part of a "well-oiled machine," Stephanie provided her managers the freedom to truly unplug, knowing their birds and shows were secure.
Stephanie's leadership style is rooted in the belief that while she cannot control an individual's moral makeup, she can set a healthy stage where everyone belongs. She is known for her "deep-dive" mentorship, personally intervening to bridge gaps in communication and shielding passionate employees from the bureaucracies that can stifle growth. Today, her former mentees stand as respected leaders at premier zoological facilities — a testament to the standards of excellence and the culture of sustainable, transparent leadership she spent four decades building.
Here, that eight-year-old girl's knowing has found its fullest expression in First Heaven Private Sanctuary LLC — a private haven where the sky belongs to the birds, and every guest is invited into their world.

Elvis

About Elvis
Elvis is a true global star, recently returning to us following a successful international contract at Port Aventura in Spain. As a King Vulture, he represents the pinnacle of avian grandeur, combining a regal presence with an incredible history that spans from ancient Mayan legends to the modern world stage.
Species Highlights:
-
A Royal Hierarchy: In the wild, King Vultures are the dominant scavengers. Their impressive size and powerful, hooked beaks allow them to lead the way at a site, earning them the "King" title as other species instinctively move aside.
-
The 'Messenger of the Gods': To the ancient Maya, the King Vulture was a sacred link between the earthly realm and the heavens. Elvis serves as a living connection to this rich cultural heritage.
-
Nature's Master Key: Elvis plays a vital role in ecosystem health. His species possesses the unique strength required to open tough hides, providing essential access to food for smaller scavengers and keeping the environment healthy.
-
Striking Biology: Beyond his piercing white eyes, Elvis’s vibrant orange and yellow "necklace" of skin is a masterpiece of evolution, signifying health and social dominance within his species.
